Describe the Importance of Shabbat[]

  • The shabbat is a day of rest and relaxation as a gesture of respect to God.
  • It refers to the seventh day of the week
    • This was when God rested during creation in Genesis
  • The shabbat starts from sunset on Friday and ends at sunset on Saturday
  • On this day jews abstain from all forms of intellectual activity
    • The exception to this is the study of the Mitzvot
  • The day is spent praying, feasting and with family
  • It is important due to its mention in the covenant
    • God requests that a day be left aside in His honour
  • Jews are reminded of the omnipotence (all powerfullness) of God during Shabbat
  • It is also important because it encourages families to spend time together
